Cisco chuckled and said, “first, she is not my fiancee. Second, it is nobody’s business who lives in my house or comes out of my room,” he said.
“It’s settled then,” she mutters and unlocks her seat belt, she was about to open the door when he held her hand. “Thank you,” he said and she smiled.
“You should leave now, you wouldn’t want to be late,” she said and released her hand to his grip, he watched her walk into the building.
The he drove away after she was out of sight. Thea couldn’t stop smiling, she is going to settle a quarter of her dad’s medical bill, she felt so happy that she danced in the elevator.
“Someone looks happy, the date went well I guess,” Mavis said with her arms folded beneath her breast. Thea was humming a song as she grinned widely.
“I am so happy Mavis,” she said as she hugged her. “You are so fast,” Mavis uttered.
“I know you are happy, but why are you happy?” She asked. Thea let go of her and sat on the couch, “today is one of these days of my life,” she said.
“One of the best?” Mavis asked sitting on another couch close to hers. “Yes, my life is not the worst in history you know,” she said.
“You are right, so why are you singing and dancing?” Mavis asked. “I won five thousand dollars and I got a job!” She screamed and took the money out of her bag.
“Oh my God! I am so happy for you!” Mavis screamed too as they hugged each other. “Tell me about it, where did you get this?” She asked Starring at the money.
“I was forced to play a scrabble game and surprisingly I won,” she explained. “A scrabble game? Are you that smart?” Mavis asked.
“Hey, I didn’t go to college, yes, but that doesn’t mean I am the dumbest person alive,” she rolled her eye. “Sorry, so did the scrabble game give you a job too? Is your new job playing scrabble?” Mavis asked.
“Of course not, I will be working as someone’s friend,” she said, immediately Mavis busted into laughter. “Is that a thing? Working as someone’s friend?” She asked while laughing hard.
“It is, I just created it,” she said remembering Cisco’s word. “Are you coming from the hospital? How do you feel?” Mavis asked checking her temperature with her hand, by touching her forehead.
“I’m not sick, I’m serious,” she said removing Mavis’s hand from her forehead. “Aren’t going to listen to the whole story before jumping to a conclusion?” She asked and Mavis could tell she is serious ’cause she was keeping a straight face.
Thea explained everything in detail, not leaving a thing out. “He has insomnia?” Mavis freaked as soon as Thea stopped talking.
“Yes,” she answered. “Now I know,” Mavis utter with her hand on her chin. “Know what?” Thea asked giving her suspicious stares.
“Why Allison turned him down, no woman would want to marry a sick man,” she said with her face squeezing in disgust.
“He isn’t sick,” Thea defended. “Is insomnia normal?” She asked. “No, but….” Mavis interrupted her. “As long as it isn’t normal it is an ailment,” she uttered.
“Having insomnia is not a curse,” Thea defended. “No one said it was sweetheart,” she replied.
“But you made I sound like it,” Thea argued. “I didn’t…. wait! Why are you acting up? Don’t tell me it’s love at first sight,” Mavis winked.
“It isn’t, I just felt sorry for him. I didn’t understand why he kept it a secret from the world at first but now I do, people are going to criticize him without trying to see things from his point of view.
You should have seen how happy he was when I agreed to help him. He deserves to be given a chance, he wants to be happy and he deserves it, ’cause he is a good person,” she retorted.
Mavis stared with her mouth wide open, it was the first time Thea will talk back to her because of a stranger. “I’m sorry,” she apologized staring away.
“What happened between you two?” Mavis asked and she kept quiet. “Don’t deny it, I know something happened,” she added.
“He made me feel like I deserve happiness, that is something I haven’t felt in years, freedom. I felt free today I forgot all my worries, and I’m grateful for that,” she replied with her head bowed.
“I’m sorry,” Mavis apologize feeling her pain. “I am not blaming you, trust me you make me feel great too. But the fact that a stranger cares about me, it felt great,” she said.
“Stop sulking, I’m sure for talking bad about your friend… Is it a friend or a boss?” Mavis asked and they shared a laugh.
“You are home early,” Thea said. “I took half of the day off,” she answered resting her back on the couch.
“Lazy @ss,” Thea mutter. “I’m having my cramps, okay,” she snapped and Thea pouted ‘sorry’
“I’ll prepare dinner before going to the hospital,” she said getting up. “You are going to pay uncle’s bills?” Mavis asked.
“Yes,” she replied on her feet.
*********
Thea smiled as she walked into the hospital, she went straight to Dr. Debbie’s office, she was talking to a patient when she got there.
She had to wait for them to finish whatever it was they are discussing before taking a seat in front of her.
“Good evening Dr. Debbie,” she smiled. “What are you doing here Thea?” She asked typing something on the computer in front of her.
“Something like ‘it’s nice to see you Thea’ wouldd have been nice,” she said. “I say that to people who don’t owe me money” she retorted.
“Here you go,” she said dropping money on her table. “You won’t pay to me and that is not up to half,” she said glaring at the money.
“Don’t worry, I will clear my depths in few months,” she assured. “Be sure to,” Dr. Debbie said writing on a sheet of paper.
Thea took the money and went to pay it, she kept the recite in her bag and went to he dad’s room.
She spent hours with him before leaving, her phone rang as she stepped out of the hospital, it was Vin. “Hi Vin,” she said immediately she picked up.
“Seems like you were waiting for my call,” he teased. “Not really but I’m glad you call,” she replied.
“Are you sick?” He asked. “Do I sound sick?” She replied with a question.
“No but I can tell you are coming out of a hospital,” he said and she turned her head side ways searching for him.
“Don’t look for me,” he said. “Where are you?” She asked still searching for him
**********
“Thank you, promise you won’t regret investing in our company,” Cisco shook hands with the Chinese investors. “Thank you to Mr. Cisco,” one of them replied.
“I will walk you out,” he volunteered and led the way, they walked behind him. He watched their car drive away before. “You look okay,” April said behind him.
He turned and walk back towards the elevator, “am I supposed to look not okay?” He asked. “That’s not what I meant,” she replied.
“You looked restless when you left in the morning,” she stated as they got into the elevator.
“I’m fine now, thanks for the observation,” he appreciated. “You are welcome,” she giggled.
The elevator stopped and they both walked out of it, Cisco’s phone beeped and he stopped to read the message.
It was from Allison, it says:
~when will you come to pick me up?~
He sighed and replied with ‘soon,’ he tuck his phone in his pocket and went to his office. Later in the night he went to Allison’s apartment.
He didn’t step out of the car but simply waited for her to come out, he didn’t wait long anyway. She got into the car with a frown and he didn’t give a damn about why she is angry.
“Are you insensitive or you just want to ignore it?” She asked but he simply drove. “Francisco!” She screamed his name.
“I can hear you perfectly Ally,” he retorted and she scoffed. “A gentle man would have opened the door for his girlfriend,” she started.
“I’m not a gentle man,” he replied. “You should be one,” she stated. “I don’t want to be, especially not to you,” he spat.
“You are crossing a line Cisco,” she snapped angrily. “Didn’t know you drew one,” he replied.
“Cisco…” She was cut short by his loud voice. “I’m tired Allison, let me be. What’s the point of trying to be romantic when we don’t love each other? I can only be a gentle guy when I’m in Iove with you,” he said.
“We don’t need love,” she retorted. “You don’t but I do, and I doubt getting it from you,” he snapped with his gaze on the road.
