It was a long walk as usual, from Monhana’s place to the palace; but eventually, they arrived. And Valerie couldn’t be happier.
Of course, the questioning guards at the gate were not left out, but this time around, Monhana had more genuine reasons for Valerie since she was there as a new maid.
“Don’t forget what I said, Valerie” Monhana said huskily as they walked.
“If you eventually get caught, you must try not to implicate me. I don’t know how exactly you want to do this because…. it’s very possible for the Prince to spot you at any time. Anyway, the Prince hardly goes out, so that might be an advantage for you. But, just incase you get caught in anyway…. remember I have a daughter”.
“You have nothing to worry about, Monhana” Valerie cut her off, calmly.
“You have my word; I’ll never implicate you”.
It was more like Valerie’s word was gold as they made Monhana feel relived instantly.
She took in a deep breath and said no more until they’d gotten into the main palace.
“I’ll take you to the hallway leading to the room where the staff is kept” Monhana whispered.
They came across most people who bowed and waved at Monhana. Looks like Monhana was well known at the palace.
Valerie kept her gaze low as she walked beside her, taking the long staircase.
They walked for a long time, Valerie’s legs were begining to hurt already. Why was it taking so long?
“It’s pretty long, right?” Monhana asked with a chuckle, making Valerie think she was reading her thoughts or something.
“Yes, kind of” she replied.
“Well, the staff is very important and was purposefully kept far away from the worker’s reach” Monhana enthused.
Finally, they got to the entrance of a very long hallway; it was so long and dark, and had not less than 10 guards on each row.
Woah…!
“And this is it” Monhana said with a sigh.
They’d stopped walking already, the entrance still very far from them.
“This is the hall and the room is at the extreme”.
Whaaat????
Valerie’s eyes dimmed as she looked at her.
“It’s so…. guarded”. She scoffed.
“I told you, didn’t I? The security is heavy. You can’t even get pass the first room without being questioned by the guards with swords”.
Oh, no. This was looking almost impossible. How on earth was she going to get to the last room to get the staff? It seemed so impossible.
“What’re you two doing there?” They suddenly heard one of the guards ask from afar, and the rest all turned to look at them.
“Uh…We… We’re just looking for someone; I think we must’ve missed our way. Sorry” Monhana answered quickly, grabbed Valerie’s hand and left the scene with her.
“Oh, dear. You see what I’m talking about?” She asked huskily as soon as they’d gotten away.
“This is the reason I’d told you it’s next to impossible getting out of Atlancia. You simply can’t get your hands on that staff. And aside that staff, there’s absolutely no way you’re getting out of here. Noway at all.
“So, what do you think? Do you still want to risk your exposure by working as a maid and try to see if you could find a way?” She asked, and for some seconds, Valerie was quiet; confused. Her gaze was lowered to the floor.
She wasn’t having a choice; If she stays at Monhana’s house, her life would still be in danger; coupled with the fact that she was pregnant.
She had no choice.
“These guards….” She suddenly looked at Monhana.
“Do they ever go on break? Go to eat?”
Monhana hesitated a little.
“Well… They do eat. It’s just the maids that goes to serve their meals. So, they eat there, on posts. Then, at nights, they have a shift”.
Hm. Valerie thought. So, the maids actually goes to serve their meal? And she was going to be a new maid.
“Is this what I’m thinking?” Monhana scoffed.
“That’s a good idea, Valerie; but unfortunately, only selected maids can go there. And you might not get selected any time soon, since you’re just a new comer”.
Mm.
“Don’t worry about it, Monhana’ She finally said.
“I’m ready to take the risk; I’ll work as the maid”.
Oh….
Monhana shrugged.
“Alright dear. As you wish; come with me”.
And they continued walking.
*************************
“I’m really sorry, My Lady; but the Prince gave specific orders not to be disturbed” the guard said to Lady Sylvia as she stood in front of Jericho’s room and insisted on going in.
“And I’m telling you; it’s important I see him. Don’t worry, you won’t get punished if that’s what you’re so worried about”. She stated impatiently, her left palm going over her smooth hair.
“I really appreciate the concern, but ….”
“Will you just keep shut and open the door..!” She snapped.
“Don’t forget I’m his lady and if you get me so upset, I’ll have you punished when I finally become Queen. Now, open the door!”
The guard halted for a minute, seeing the danger and seriousness in her eyes. Then, slowly, he opened the door.
“Good” Sylvia muttered and walked in.
She got into the big refurbished room and looked around, noting it was empty.
“Jericho?” She called, her eyes going around.
Then, she heard footsteps and quickly turned to the direction to see him walking in from his inner room.
Oh….
“Jericho” she sighed.
“Good morning”.
He was putting on a black pair of trouser and a black sleeveless,a big gold chain on his neck.
“Marcel!” Jericho called out, and the door opened with the guard stepping in.
“My Prince….”
“I thought I told you I didn’t want to be disturbed?” Jericho cut him off, icily.
And for a few seconds, the guard was mute.
“I… I’m sorry, My Prince. It …”
“I was the one that insisted, Jericho” Lady Sylvia cut in, trying to be his saving grace.
Jericho glanced at the floor, before looking up at the guard.
“When I give an order, I expect it to be respected, even by my father. You’re just pathetic”. He said, and instantly, the guard started choking.
Sylvia looked at him in shock.
“Jericho….!” She flinched, but he didn’t even blink as the guard continued choking and finally reached for the floor, dropping dead.
Then, Jericho looked are her.
“Why are you here, Sylvia?” He asked casually as he walked over to his table, acting like nothing had happened.
