With dilated eyes, she turned around to have a look….
And she felt her heart stop beating as she stared at him – Jericho – walking in with so much glory all around.
Dressed in a black robe, shoes dark, and eyes cold, he looked just like a dark – hearted King.
Valerie’s lips dropped in shock as she stared at him, at the man that had made her risk her life by coming all the way to his strange land; the man that…. got her pregnant.
She couldn’t help but panic. That was Jericho!
“Fiona!” Tammy called huskily beside her, sounding really surprised.
Was she lost or something?
“What’re you looking at? Come on, let’s go”. She whispered, but Kaylan couldn’t get herself to turn away immediately as she got carried away, staring at Jericho.
Tears built up at the brim of her eyes, but of course, she was never going to let them drop. Oh! How much she’s missed Jericho.
“Welcome Prince Jericho” the rest of the people at the table greeted him as he took a seat. She was far away from him and knew there was no way he could spot her – at least, since he wasn’t looking her way.
Of course, why would the Prince just want to stare at a bunch of maids leaving?
“Valerie!” Fiona tapped her hand and that was the moment she turned around, sniffling lightly.
“I’m sorry* she whispered and they left the hall together.
“Hey; what just happened in there?” Fiona asked as they walked down.
“Who were you staring at? The prince?”
“N…No. I was just trying to confirm something. Please, don’t worry about it3” she answered with her gaze on the floor.
Her heart had grown so weak already; so damn weak. If only she could un-see Jericho from her memory.
*****************************
It was a long day at the palace; with Valerie continuously glancing through the window to see when it’d get dark enough so she could tell if she was to leave already. She really wanted to get home and get some rest; or maybe have enough time to wallow in her pains.
“Are you sure you’re fine?” Fiona had asked along the line, noting she had suddenly grown cold.
“Just having a light headache. Don’t worry about me; I’ll be fine”. She forced a smile and resumed with what she was doing.
Finally, they came to a close for the day as the maids working the night shift came over.
Valerie and the rest went into the inner room to change their dresses, and after that, they all went downstairs where Valerie had found Monhana waiting for her.
***********************
Sylvia kissed her son’s forehead after putting him to sleep. She covered him up with the duvet and was about leaving the bed when the door went open with her mother walking in.
“Mother” she called and stood up.
“You’re finally back”.
“Yes” Mariah replied, exhaling deeply.
“After the meeting, I had to go see Lady Kylie. We had some important things to talk about”.
Her eyes found her sleeping grandson on the bed.
“Is Asher sick? Why’s he sleeping at this time?” Mariah asked, showing concern for her grandson.
“Oh, no; he’s fine. I think he justice played a lot and needs some rest” Sylvia answered with a smile, touching his cheek.
“Please, let’s go outside so we don’t wake him up”. She added and they both left the room.
“How was the meeting, mother?” Sylvia asked as they walked out of the house.
“Oh! It was fine. Just a stupid maid that almost ruined my mood by spilling drink on me” she hissed, and Sylvia arched her brows.
“A maid? Sorry about that”. She sighed.
“I’m fine now. She’s just lucky the King had intercepted for her; else, I’d have roasted her alive”. She huffed.
A brief silence stepped in between them.
“Did you go to see Jericho as planned?” Mariah suddenly asked, and Sylvia nodded ruefully.
“Hm. Tell me what I don’t know. It didn’t go as planned, did it?” She asked and Sylvia shook her head.
“Sylvia, are you really sure about this guy?? I mean, I understand the fact that he’s handsome, dreamy and the heir to the throne, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s cold hearted and doesn’t care about anyone. Are you sure that’s the kind of man you want to end up with?”
“Of course, mother; I’m sure. He’s the father of my child, remember? I don’t have a choice” Sylvia sniffed.
“Well, simply because he’s the father of your child doesn’t mean you have to end up with him. Looking at the bright side, Asher hasn’t really enjoyed this fatherly love, and he’s being doing great without it…”
“No, he’s not” Sylvia cut in.
“My son needs his father and I need to make sure that happens, mother. Besides, I love Jericho”.
Mariah bent her head and sighed, knowing exactly how she felt. She’s been down that road before – trying to reunite her child and lover, but it didn’t work out.
Her heart grew heavy as she remembered the child she had lost…..
