mama tapped me that midnight and I woke up instantly as a light sleeper. I stood up from the mat I shared with my sibblings; Rita and Okon.
The wrapper we user as coverage fell,I took it and covered them well but mama still woke Rita up.

“mama are we going somewhere?”I asked.Rita still rolled,mama tapper her again and she stood up.
“not again”Rita grunts.
“not this time…bia(come) the both of you”mama gestured,
Rita and I followed her to the backyard.

“by this time mama what happened?” rita asked.
“nothing much,I just want to speak to my female children as a good mother”mama said.
Rita grunts and lay her head on my laps but her eyes were opened.

“chetachi”mama called my name.
“yes mama”I replied.
“how old are you now?”she asked.
“20”I replied,wondering where she might be driving at.
could it be marriage?.

at least our family is okay.
mama sells fruit in the market while papa works as a gatekeeper in king somadinna’s palace.

“I want to beg you,chetachi” mama said and took my right hand into her palms.
Rita and I exchange puzzled glances

“your father and I do not have enough power to send the three of you to school at the same time..so we are suggesting if you can drop for a while so that we can further Rita and okon. After all if they read their books well and get good jobs it will be for the benefits of all of us”she said.

“waaattttt!! Rita frowned,stood up and folded her arms,
she was in tears.

“mama bikonu(please) that can’t be possible”Rita burst into tears.I kept quiet as a matured mind.
I can feel mama’s pains tho.

Rita nods her head negatively.”aunty chetachi can’t drop out,how can you expect that as intelligent as she is, she always carry first position in her class,she can’t drop out.Let me drop out instead”Rita said.

“don’t quote me wrong,I didn’t say she won’t go back to school,rita, chetachi this is just for a while…I beg of you my daughters just understand me”mama said.

“what’s the usefulness of her education when afterall she will end up in the kitchen at last” we heard papa’s voice from behind.
Rita hung her mouth open in bewilderment.

“papa so you’re now saying female education is useless”Rita said.
mama stood up and took both my hand and Rita’s hand.
“akwaugo(my precious daughters) don’t mind your father he is suffering from ignorance,he thinks female children can’t make a family proud” mama said.

“only a son can make me proud and that’s okon…even you Rita you will soon drop out”papa said.

mama let go of my hand,
I rushed inside in tears.
so I won’t go to school again,I would only watch other kids right?.

the door opened,I turned it was papa he just watched me and left.
mama came in next to wipe my tears I smiled and stopped her from touching the tears.
“I already accept,I will stay at home and help you in shop as well,
one day we will be happy,
one day I will make papa understand that not all males are better than females”I said.
she smiled.
“that’s my girl…I hope you get to fix the holes in my life.Remember chetachi I will not always be there to save you, I can only teach you to make it in life but only you can fight for yourself….
make an effort” she said and tore the helm of her wrapper.

I watched her like a movie,
then she gave me the part of the cloth she tear from her wrapper.

“what will I use this for?”I asked.
“I want you to always hold it so that you can always remember that you’re rag and only you can change it” she said and left.

I woke up very early and hasily carried a bowl then I left for Margaret’s house.
Margaret is the daughter of a wealthy rich merchant and also a student of royal high school.

anyways,I came there to fetch water since there was tap outside their gate,going to the stream would be so stressful.

soon enough,the gate opened and a car drove out.

she whyned down her car window and look through it to my side.

“you people have started again right? fetch the water till it is dry oooo… wretched villagers”the woman cursed veery early in the morning.

she said something I didn’t hear well and finally drove away.
I locked the tap when my water was full and tried lifting the bowl on my head.

“Kai…my fair maiden”the gateman strolled out.
“good morning sir”I greeted.
“abeg no dey call me sir,call me chike you’re too beautiful to be calling me sir”he said while staring at me dreamingly until someone called his name.

“get back to your post”a strict voice which turn out to be magarate was heard, chike quickly left.
Margaret showed up,
she was dressed in a classic uniform of red highwaist skirt and a white shirt then a red popsocks alongside a red sneakers.
she attends royal high and not the local schools.

I watched her enter her black car then her driver drove her out.By then have already carried my water so I left.

soon I was home.I poured the water into the blue drum,I still need to fetch more to get it filled.
I headed back and again and fetch till the drum was almost filled up.

I admired the children who were passing on uniforms,if not for money I also should write my final exams and in fact i was the best best student.

“chetachi hy” a girl in the junior school waved at me,I smiled and waved back then faced my chores.

I still needed to fetch one more time. I carried the bowl and hurried back. Again I met the womanizer that calls himself a gateman smiling sheeplyi didn’t even look at him,
I fetch my water and left.

“kai that thing to dey shake”I heard him chuckled. I only smiled and left.
I poured the water where I wanted it and entered the sitting room.
I checked the kitchen and met the ingredients for breakfast there,I started cooking then I heard a knock on the door.I cleaned my have and went to answer it,
it was veronica,my desk mate in the local school that I attend.

she was breathing heavily.
“thank god you’re at home”age said and hastily opened her bag.I smiled cos I already knew what she came for…her assignment of course.
I collected her book and pen and started writing the answers to the questions for her.
soon I was done,I handed her the book and pen back.

“ahh thank you my friend,I could have scored zero if I didn’t find you home”she said and turned to leave, I also turned to enter the kitchen.

“wait a minute,chetachi come closer have you seen this”she said and showed me a newspaper.
“umm no”I said and collected it from her, the headlines was about royal high school.

I kept okon and rita’s own separately and took mama’s own to her shop then I headed for papa’s work place where he works as a gatekeeper,

I got to the palace and was allowed in by a security then I asked for my father.
“cheta you will have to wait a little bit princess Felicia sent him message” the security man said.
for a seconds I felt like I wasn’t hearing well.How can a ten years old girl send my father message.
I thought as much,evil king, wicked children.

“will you wait for him”one of the security asked,I jolted out of my thoughts.
“okay,I will come back”I replied.
i turned to leave with the food neatly arranged,I can’t even feel comfortable hearing that a 10years old girl just sent my father message.

the security let me out and I strolled out while trying to suppress my anger.

I suddenly ran into someone as I step out of the gate,the nylon slipped out of my hand.while trying to catch it, the plate opened and all the soup poured to his direction and stained the white attire he had on. He flinched with full shock,my own face was surprised.He is tall,fair skin like mine and he has a black dread lock that stopped on his shoulder,his black eyes which was beautiful rolled in burning anger.

I looked into his white attire it was badly stained,then I saw a red burn mark the hot soup already gave him on his wrist.

he spoke with so much superiority,
that was when I saw his necklace,it had the royal sign.
