My conversation with Timmy repeated over and over in my head. I knew that someday soon, I would have to leave the manor and Gadel. News of the war came almost daily. My father’s armies were defending Danubae well but there were heavy casualties on both sides.

A company of Groithians were occupying my precious palace and scouring the countryside for my parents. It was only a matter of time before one or both of them were found.

I suppose my worries brought a cloud over my happy demeanor and Gadel sensed it, but never pressed the reasons behind my somber moods. But one night we were dining- or he was dining and I was picking at my food- and he could take it no longer. He asked me what was wrong.

“Nothing,” I mumbled.

“Don’t lie to me, Havara. You’ve been moping about for weeks now. You hardly ever smile, you barely touch your food, and I know that you haven’t been sleeping. I hear you go out at all hours. Is it the dreams again?”

I shook my head. I had been having the dreams and they’d been growing more vivid but they were not the cause of my depression. Gadel looked pleadingly at me. “Tell me what’s wrong, Havara.”

The pain in his voice stabbed at my heart and I closed my eyes to hold back the tears. “You know I love you, right?”

“Of course. And I, you.”

“Sometimes…sometimes people- no matter how much they love each other- can’t be together. They’re too different.”

“What are you saying?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

He frowned. “You do. Tell me.” His voice was low and commanding. I could tell his frustration with me was making him angry.

“Do you love me enough to let me go? If you had to, I mean.”

“You mean…set you free? You know I would if I could but that’s father’s choice. I have no power over that. But you know you’re not a slave to me. Have I ever treated you as one?”

“No. But that’s not what I mean. Do you love me enough to let me leave here?”

Gadel studied me carefully. “Where are you planning on going?”

“Nowhere. I…I’m just saying if there came a time when I had to leave, would you let me?”

He growled. “You’re talking in riddles, Havara. I don’t understand what you’re saying. Maybe I would if I knew more about you, but…” he let the sentence hang.

“I can’t tell you,” I whispered, choking back tears.

He pounded his fists on the table and his chair screeched as he pushed it back and rose to his feet. He was angry and rightly so. I knew everything about him and he knew nothing about me. We were in love and now I was talking about leaving him. He was scared and confused and I didn’t blame him for being upset with me.

“Why can’t you tell me?” he demanded.

“I just…can’t.” My throat constricted as I fought back a sob. I couldn’t stay in that room any longer. I jumped from my seat and with a tearful, “I’m sorry.” I ran from the room.

Gadel called after me but I didn’t stop running. I had no destination. My feet carried me out of the house and past the stables. I passed the field which would lead me to the stream and ran instead into the thick woods at the edge of the property. I didn’t stop until I was well into the forest. When I paused, leaning against a tall silver tree trunk, panting breathlessly, I realized I was utterly lost.

It was dark and only a few stray beams of moonlight filtered through the dense treetops. A fine mist covered the forest floor and made it hard to see. Just as I was beginning to panic, a gruff voice came from behind me.

“What’re you runnin’ from, ‘Vara?” Nealp asked, stepping into a beam of moonlight.

I was almost glad to see him. It meant I wasn’t lost. But one look at his face as his eyes looked me over was enough to make me panic again. I pressed my back against the tree trunk.

“I…I’m a little lost, Nealp…could you help me get back to the manor?”

He nodded and I breathed a sigh of relief. “But not yet.”

“Nealp?” I stumbled away from the tree, trying to back away as he moved closer to me.

“‘Vara’s awful pretty,” he said, nearing me. “Nealp liked ‘Vara, ever since ‘Vara came to village.”

“Nealp…take me back to the manor, now,” I said in my most commanding voice.

He shook his head. “Want to play.” A large hand clumsily shot out at me, ripping at my gown, managing to tear a sleeve and part of the shoulder off. I stumbled away from him.

“You don’t want to do this. Think Nealp. You know you don’t want to do this. Master Gadel will have your head. Stop now and we can go back to the manor and forget it happened, OK?”

But my efforts to talk him down were futile. It was as if he didn’t hear me. He didn’t miss a step, in fact, his pace quickened and suddenly I found myself pinned between him and a tree trunk. His breath was hot and fetid on my skin and in my nostrils. I struggled to be free of his grasp but he had both my hands pinned above my head with one of his.

I cried out but my only response was a grunt from Nealp and my own voice echoing back to me. With his free hand, Nealp ripped the bodice of my gown down the middle, leaving only my corset between us. He growled, obviously flustered with the many strings and knots that laced the undergarment.

“Please stop,” I begged as he abandoned attempts at my corset and pulled my skirts up, running a clumsy hand up my thigh. A new rush of fear surged within me and I realized that my face was streaked with tears. I opened my mouth to scream though I knew it was futile. I got out a short screech before his mouth was over mine. I grimaced and frantically tried to turn my head and kick him away but to no avail.

But suddenly, he stilled. The powerful hand around my wrists loosened and fell away as he slumped to the ground. Dazed, it was a moment before I saw the sword through his middle and the violet ogre blood seeping onto the leafy ground.

A fierce sob escaped my throat and I slid to the ground, letting out my anguish in long wails. I didn’t even look up at my savior. I knew who it was. I could feel his presence- his eyes watching me. Gadel knelt at my side, placing a tentative hand on my bare shoulder.

“Havara? Are you all right? Did he hurt you?” I shook my head. “Did he…?”

“No…you came in time. How did you find me?”

“I saw you run into the woods. I thought to give you some time to yourself…then I heard you cry out.”

“Oh,” I mumbled, wiping the tears from my face. I looked up at him, finding that his eyes were not full of compassion and worry as I’d expected. They were angry.

“Don’t you ever do that again,” he commanded.

“Do what? Almost be ravished by a half-ogre in a forest?”

“Run off into a forest by yourself at night! You scared me! Don’t you know what it’d do to me if anything ever happened to you? It was stupid and don’t ever even think of doing it again!” The anger gradually faded from his countenance to reveal the real fear he was feeling. He pulled me to his chest and kissed my forehead brutally.

We sat there for a long while until finally he said, “Let’s get you home. You must be freezing.” And he lifted me into his arms and carried me out of the woods.

When we reached the house, he carried me up the stairs and to his chambers. I gave him a warning look. “Gadel…”

“I’m not letting you out of my sight. Don’t worry. I’ll be a perfect gentleman.” He grinned. “Unless…”

I rolled my eyes and rested my head on his shoulder. I wanted to protest but I had little energy. I’d wanted to protest being carried all the way back to the manor, too but I’d realized that I probably wouldn’t have been able to make it on my own.

He lay me carefully on one side of his stately bed. With gentle hands, he removed my slippers and the tattered remains of my gown, leaving me in my corset and shift. I knew I’d never be able to sleep confined in the tight stays so I carefully loosened the knots enough to where I could breathe easily.

When I had, and laid back into the soft pillows, I felt the bed shift as Gadel lay down beside me. With a quick glance over at him, I found he’d discarded his shirt and the scar from where he’d been wounded at war was apparent across his abdomen.

“You told me it was just a scratch.”

“Huh?” I looked purposefully at the long, red scar that stretched from under his left arm to an inch from his navel. “Oh…it was just a scratch. I barely felt it at all.”

I rolled my eyes. “Sure.”

He sighed and threw an arm about my waist, pulling me to his chest. “Go to sleep, Havara.”

“How did it happen?”

“What?”

“How’d you get the scar?”

“Axe.”

“An axe did that?”

“I dodged it in time. Go to sleep.”

I sighed and snuggled back against him and soon fell into a deep sleep. But it was not a peaceful sleep. The most vivid dream I’d ever had came to me that night. It began as the others. I was a child, sitting in the garden with Aliqua and Shane. The sky turned black and my mother appeared to me. But this time, I could hear her words.

“It’s your time, Drianna. It’s your time.”

“I can’t,” I cried out to her.

“You must.” She smiled kindly at me. “You are my daughter. This is what you were born for. Take it. Follow him.”

“Follow who?”

But she vanished and I was left alone. But I wasn’t alone. There was someone there, on the edge of the garden. I looked, but I could not see them. My mother’s voice echoed in my mind. “Follow him.”

Gadel’s hand on my shoulder woke me. I opened my eyes to find him leaning over me with a concerned countenance. “Another dream?” he asked.

I nodded and sat up. My skin was damp with perspiration and my breath was ragged and my birthmark stung painfully. I reached around and fingered it, hissing at the pain it sent through my skin.

“Havara?”

“Hmm?”

“What is that?”

“It’s just my birthmark.”

“Why is it glowing?”

Startled, I strained to look at the mark on my shoulder blade. I could just see a faint blue light emanating from it. “I…I don’t know…”

“It’s fading,” Gadel said.

I looked and indeed, the light was growing fainter and fainter until finally it was extinguished. I frowned. “I don’t know what it was…let’s just go back to sleep.”

But I did know what it was. It was a sign. The time when I’d have to leave Colias Manor was nearing. I didn’t want to think about it. I snuggled against Gadel’s chest, resting my head under his chin, and pushing all thoughts of leaving from my mind. But I wouldn’t be able to for much longer- in fact, not a day longer.

I went to pick blackberries for a pie that morning. I hummed happily to myself as I carried on my task, despite the traumatic events of the previous night. Sleeping and waking in Gadel’s arms had put me in a light mood. I’d decided to live for the now and not ruin the time I had left with him with thoughts of leaving.

So I cheerfully filled my basket and carried it back to the manor. As I neared the front courtyard, I noticed an unfamiliar horse hitched to a post beside the steps. I frowned in bewilderment. Gadel wasn’t expecting company as far as I knew.

“Who’s here?” I asked Timmy as I handed her the blackberries.

She shrugged. “A stranger arrived while you were out. I don’t know who he is. I think he’s just passing through. Master Gadel took him into the parlor for some coffee, I think.”

Curious, I crept down the hall to the front parlor and stood just outside the door, listening. I could hear the muffle of Gadel’s deep voice and then another one- lighter with a melodious quality to it. I listened harder and could just make out the stranger’s words.

“…looking for a girl. I was told she might be around these parts.”

It couldn’t be. I peeked around the doorframe and my eyes fell on a fiery red head in the armchair in front of Gadel’s. He stopped speaking immediately as I took one, hesitant step into the room and rose from his chair.

I gasped. “Shane…”

(AT THE HALL)
“Dearly Beloved,” the elder began, ” we are gathered here today in the presence of these witnesses, to join Alpha Derek and Lady Diana in matrimony commended to be honorable among all; and therefore is not to be entered into lightly but reverently, passionately, lovingly and solemnly. Into this – these two persons present now come to be joined. If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together – let them speak now or forever hold their peace. “
He continued, “Friends, we have joined here today to share with Alpha Derek and Lady Diana an important moment in their lives. Their time together, they have seen their love and understanding of each other grow and blossom and now they have decided to live out the rest of their lives as one.”
“Do you Alpha Derek, take Diana, to be your wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you two part.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Do you Lady Diana, take Derek, to be your husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do you two part.”
“Yes. Yes, I do.”
” It’s time to put each other the ring.” The elder instructed.
” I Derek give you Diana this ring as an eternal symbol of my love and commitment to you.” He fixed the ring into her finger.
” I Diana, give you Diana this ring as an eternal symbol of my love and commitment to you.” She did the same to him.
At the final declaration, the elder said. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you alpha Derek and Lady Diana husband and wife. You may now kiss each other. “
He ended with, ” I present to you the newly married couple
Everyone stood up with an applaud as the couple lead out.
After the matrimony was over, Diana’s eyes went all over in search for her parents. Even with the now over grown bumb, she walked up and down. Now that she has seen them, she ran to give them a warm hug.
Derek had ordered some people to stop her but, she didn’t listen but kept running. Mrs Craig, her mother held her mouth in fear, but did that seem to bother Diana?
No…
She ran to them, throwing herself in their embrace. ” Diana, you will hurt the baby. ” Her mother gave her a look.
” Mom, don’t worry, the baby is fine. “
” Well, that isn’t an excuse to me. If you wanna die, then not my grandchild. “
” Mom, you don’t care about me anymore? “
” I do, but it seems like you don’t care about yourself. Come here, give me another hug. ” She chuckled, pulling Diana to herself.
” Dad, how have you two been all this days. “
” We’ve been doing great. Though, your mother keeps mourning you until Kent told us you were alive with the wolves. “
” Mom… ” She stressed the word. ” Do you wanna kill yourself? “
” What do you expect? I thought I had lost my only child and daughter. I have to, it’s not like I loved what I was doing. You know what, whatever. It’s your day, let us jubilate it. “
” Why don’t we sit at the high table. I know my husband will be expecting us. “
” Yes, sure. Sure. “

Chapter 48:
“ DIVIANA… LUCAS… ”
( Seven Months Later )
“Call me my mother! Call me my mother! ” She cried in pains.
“But, my lady. You… ”
” I said, call me my mother!” She yelled at the nurse who did that Immediately.
Not quite long, her mother walked in straight to her side.
” Hold me tight, don’t let me go.” She said in pains and tears.
” I will never leave you my love. I’m here for you, okay? ” She assured her.
She nodded continuously while the nurse asked her for a push.
She screamed, her grip tight on her mother’s hand. She kept gasping for air.
The nurse ordered for another push which she did. Again and again, this she went on until something like a head was seen.
“I see it. I see it. One more push my lady.”
“Ahhhhh!!!”
There came the cry of a baby filling the air.
“What do we have?” One of the nurse asked.
“It’s a girl!”
Diana stared at her mother who offered her an assuring look that everything was gonna be okay.
Soon, Diana felt pains in her stomach like something was kicking her.
“There’s another!” A nurse informed. “There’s one more.”
Diana looked at her mother weakly, she wasn’t sure if she could endure it this time. She needed to rest, but the being in her wants to leave.
” Kiara, I thought you said it was only a she! ” She echoed not minding the people around her.
” Sorry, I forgot to mention there was a he too. “
” Oh my God, I don’t think I can hold this anymore. Mother… ” She pressed her hand tight.
Mrs Craig rubbed her palms softly, tears dropping out of her eyes. She can’t do this, she needed some rest.
“Okay. You need to push hard, my lady. Push!”
She held her teeths firmly together. Her body stiffened in each push. It was time for the last push, she gathered her strength, her eyes turned purple.
” Diana, this is the last… you’ve got to push. ” Kiara whispered in her head.
” I’m trying, Kia. I’m trying, okay. “
The other her was ready, Kiara has to help her.
She gave the hard push…
She breathed heavily.
“What do we have?” A nurse asked.
“It’s a boy! ” Replied the other.
“I wanna touch my babies.” She said dully and they brought the two infants to her side.
They laid them beside her. She couldn’t stop from staring at this creatures, they were beautiful, they were gorgeous.
“Do you want to feel them?” She asked.
She nodded her head. ” Yes, yes. Oh my… goodness. ” She held them both in her arms, humming one of those lullabies she always sang for Diana when she was little.
” Aren’t they beautiful?”
She nodded.
Derek entered, looking astonished at his two little kids on Diana’s arms. ” Come, Derek, look what we have. ” Mrs Craig said,
He came closer, He took his male child into his arms, holding him tight from falling. He loved babies, but he has never taken one into his arms so he fears he might hurt his child.
For the first time, a tear fell from his eyes. He has never thought of being a father. Now he is, what kind of father will he become?
“He’s beautiful. They both are so beautiful. My bloods, my futures. “
★ ★ ★ ★
( Six years later )
Diviana ✓
” DIVIANA! ” I heard mom called but I paid deaf ears to her, running down the hallway. ” Diviana, I said, get back here, will you?! “
I stopped, stamping my feet angrily to the ground while I heard her approach me. ” Mom… “
” Don’t you ever mom me, okay? I said get back to your room and stay with your brother. ” She pointed towards the direction of my room.
” But mother, Lucas can take care of himself. Besides, I just wanna play. “
” You just wanna play, ” I notice her eyes look on my legs. ” And you aren’t putting on your shoes? Divia… “
” But this is not outside the castle… “
” Can you stop exchanging words with me and do as I said? To your room, now! ” She pointed.
” But mother… ” I tried to say.
” I said, don’t mother me… “
” Diana, take it easy. ” Cax said, touching her shoulder.
” Take it easy? Did you even listen to her? No, she is going into her room. And woman, what are you still waiting for? ” She said, throwing me a hard gaze.
” Fine, I’m going.. ” I scoffed, murmuring to myself as I headed back to my room.
” Hey Divia… ” Lucas tried to say but I cut him short.
” Shut up. ” I banged the door close.
Diana ✓
” You have to take it easy on her, besides she’s still a kid. “
” No, she’s stubborn. ” I corrected.
” That trait didn’t just come from nowhere, she must had gotten that from her mother. “
I eyed her, ” That was years ago. “
” Traits doesn’t give a damn how long it was or has been. It flows, and I think you just passed that down to her. ” She chuckled.
” No, I was stubborn, but not as stubborn as she is. ” We started to my room.
” I bet yours was worst. Cos if I can remember, yours resulted to you getting bitten. “
” Oh, maybe I must have forgotten. “
” Thank God I reminded you. “
” Uh-huh… “

The morning has surfaced, we were both awake sitting on the bed. Derek was busy with his laptop, while I sat busy with nothing. I was still contemplating if I should tell him about Kiara’s discussion with me or if I rather keep it to myself.
I don’t even know how to start it but… I really need to have this discussed with him now. I sighed.
” Derek, ” I called him.
” Mm-hmm. “
” Can we talk about something? “
” Right now? ” He asked, his eyes still on his laptop.
” Yeah, right now. “
He stopped what he was doing, shutting his laptop close. He adjusted himself, that we were sitting face to face.
” Okay, I’m listening. “
” I uhmm… ” I started with a pause. ” You know, I was wondering, we haven’t gotten married yet and, I’m almost… so close to giving birth. So, I was thinking if we might discuss about our union. What do you think? ” I don’t even know what I’m saying.
” I thought about that so, I decided on hosting our marriage next week. But I didn’t wanna push it too forward without getting your opinion first. And you know, I didn’t wanna talk about it in your condition. “
I sighed. ” It doesn’t matter if we have to get married with me being pregnant. It’s much better if I may say. “
” You’re scared people might take me away from you? “
” No… I.. I mean of course not. ” But the look was just too obvious to tell, leaving him to laugh at me. I found myself laughing too.
By the way, why would I be scared?
Everyone of course knows we are mated already. Or, am I being too concerned because of guests yet to come for the wedding. You know, those pretty ladies who thinks they are better than everyone in the world.
Gosh… I guess I’m overthinking right now.
” Yeah, I’m scared, a little tho. ” I confessed.
” It’s okay to be scared. But you’ve got to believe this, I’m never leaving you for anyone. Not after what we’ve started together. “
I nodded in relief.
” You wanna talk about anything else? ” He asked again.
Hold on… Did he just…
” You just read my mind, didn’t you?” I pointed at him.
” It was too much. I mean, your thoughts are too much and they are bothering me. “
” I’m sorry, I… Maybe I won’t ask again. “
” No, go ahead. “
I exhaled, rubbing my palms. ” Last night, I thought about this but, I don’t think you might approve it. Can you just read my mind, please? “
” Diana you know I can’t do that. It’s your privacy, I don’t wanna invade it. If you’re being too shy to tell me, maybe you can anytime. “
” No, I want to have it discussed now. I… Okay, it’s about my parents. I was thinking maybe you can permit them to attend the ceremony. I just wanna see them, even if it’s for the last time. “
He smiled. ” Don’t worry about them, I already sent them an invitation. “
I chuckled, scoffing. Gosh, I’m damn surprised. ” Oh my goodness, Derek, you’re full of surprises. Thank you so so much, I love You. I love you. ” I threw myself on him, causing him to rest on the bed.
” I’m grateful for what you did, Derek. You definitely don’t know how happy I am. “
” Whatever makes you happy, makes me happy too. “
This time, it was I who pressed my lips on his, kissing him passionately.
*
*
” Damn it, kiara you’re hurting me. ” I grunted at the hot pains in my belly.
” Sorry, she’s too stubborn just like you. I’m trying to calm her down but she’s too… “
” Ahhh…” I cut her shirt with my yell. ” Kiara for damn sake make her stop!! ” I yelled.
” I’m trying. I think… “
” You think what? “
” I think she wants to pull out. “
” Pull out? ” I repeated. ” Pull out where?! What’s that supposed to mean? “
” I don’t know. I think she wants to leave your womb.”
” Then make her know it not the damn time yet. I’m … Oh my God, I feel like passing out. Kiara!! “
” For God sake, Diana, I’m trying!. “
” Then keep trying!! ” I held the lower part of my stomach, pushing myself to lay on the bed. ” This is the most painful moment of… my… life. ” I said in clenched teeth. ” Whew…” I breathed, in and out.
I did that again and again as if that would help. And indeed it did. ” Kiara, ” I called with a warning tune. ” Don’t you ever, ever again play with her. Understood?! “
” Yes, boss. “
I exhaled heavily, resting my back on the bed. ” Whew… “
*
*
That night, I sat happily at the varenda. I always go there each time I wanted to be alone. I wanted to think, to be outside the universe.
I never expected Derek to have done what he did. Every other alpha will try to show how angry they were when humans are being mentioned, humans different from their mates.
But Derek just proved how different he was to other alpha’s. First, he respects my privacy. He never reads through my mind without my permission. And now, he just approved the idea of letting my parents attend our marriage.
Did I just said approved? He has already send an invitation letter to them??
Good God, I’m so fucking excited right now. Finally, I was gonna see my parents once again!
