Ximena shivered when she felt the unfamiliar hands hold her; that very moment, she knew it was him. She gasped slightly and cocked her head to see his face; and when she did, all she felt was nervousness.
“Your back…” he hushed. “…it needs to be more erect”.
With one hand still on her shoulder, he moved the other to her back and fixed it to his desire.
Ximena couldn’t explain how she felt with his hands on her. Surely, that wasn’t the first time she was being touched by a guy, but his…it felt so different. There was a quirky sensation that accompanied it – one that threatened her sanity. And keeping her cool was something that took a lot from her.
Desultorily, he went round and stood in front of her.
“Three fingers are needed to hold the string; not two” He uttered as he directed her fingers the right way. And while his eyes were fixed on her hands, hers were fixed on his face.
Ximena found herself gulping often than normal. Staring into that ineffable face of his, she couldn’t explain how she felt.
“And your thumb… should be right here” He lifted her thumb and placed it the way it should. Done, he stepped back to stand beside her.
“Now, lift your bow towards the target” He instructed, and with shaky hands, Ximena pointed the bow towards the tree. Even Nir could notice how slightly her hands shook.
“Pull back the string” He instructed and she obeyed.
“Lift your elbow up”.
“Aim…and release”.
And ”WHOOP!” went the arrow from Ximena’s bow. It flew straight in the air, but went pass the tree and landed on the ground.
Disappointedly, Ximena lowered her hands and sighed.
“Not too bad for a start” Nir commended instead and swiftly, she looked at him.
But whatever moment that was about building up got interrupted by Ema who suddenly showed up with a covered plate.
Both Ximena and Nir turned to look at her, with Ximena being the most surprised considering how excited Ema seemed.
Although, for a second, dejection flashed in her face, realizing how closely Ximena and the stranger stood, but she quickly wiped it off with a smile.
“H-hi” She chuckled and went close. “Um…. looks like you two are busy”.
Ximena said nothing as she kept wondering what she was up to. And Nir, of course, gave no reaction.
“Um…” Ema stood in front of him, her heart throbbing fast. “I… figured you must be stressed. So, I decided to get you something to eat. I actually made it myself and can assure you it’s delicious”.
She couldn’t even look him in the face while she spoke and of course, it was something Ximena could understand. But, what she couldn’t understand was her reason for serving him food. Why was she stooping so low?
Nir, in his usual cranky way, looked at the plate, then looked up at her. And that moment, feeling his gaze upon her, Ema could feel her legs wobbling.
“I’m not interested” He predictably mumbled and walked away, going towards the tree.
No doubt, Ema’s heart splitted at his harsh response. She glanced at Ximena and felt so ashamed.
“Um… Maybe I should just place it somewhere for you? You might want to try it later?” She asked, but got no reply nor a stare from him.
She wanted to ask again but somehow, felt it wouldn’t end well as he looked like someone that could easily let go of his temper. Considerably, she looked at Ximena and thought of going through her, but Ximena noticed and quickly avoided her gaze.
“Let’s try again, please” Ximena said as she hurried towards Nir. “I believe I’ll become perfect with more practice”.
Ema hurt from seeing them work together. She just wanted to be friends…was it so difficult?
Gloomily, she turned around and left.

HOURS LATER ✍️
**********************
Ximena found it so difficult falling asleep that night. Her excitement, nervousness and all was triggered as the thought of what awaited her the next morning stung to her head.
Will it really work? Will she be able to shoot the Alpha and get her mission over with? Oh! She wanted to! She could only imagine the look on his face when she shoots him from afar. Oh… she had actually forgotten he was always with a mask. Either ways, she was still going to watch him die. And with that achieved, she’d be able to go back home and keep up her father’s legacy. She really couldn’t wait.
She kept tossing on the bed, unable to fall asleep; until suddenly, Ema’s voice came up.
“Ximena” She arched her brows when she heard her voice. She had actually thought she’d be asleep.
Cocking her head, Ximena couldn’t see her face since the room was dark. But she could tell she was still lying beside her.
“Looks like you’re still awake” Ema added. “Well, I actually want to ask you some questions”.
Ximena noticed she wasn’t sounding as harsh as she used to. “What is it?” She asked.
“Uhm… The guy that always comes to the house, what’s his name?”
Ximena scoffed and shook her head. Seriously? She had expected it.
“I don’t know, Ema. Why are you even asking?” She replied.
“Nothing. I…”Ema sighed. “The thing is, he looks very handsome and… nice. And I was just wondering if there was a way I could get to know him because… it’s obvious it’s not that easy getting to him”.
For a while, Ximena was silent and couldn’t tell how she felt hearing those words from Ema. Obviously, that was the reason she’s been acting all friendly of recent.
“Well, you’re right” She shrugged. “He’s handsome and all, but if you want to get close to him, that would greatly depend on you and not me”.
“B… but how?” She could feel Ema sitting up. “Tell me, Ximena. Earlier, you could see I tried giving him some soup, but he wouldn’t even look at me. How else do I go about?”
Now it became so clear to Ximena. The poor lady had developed a crush on the stranger.
“Well…” She exhaled deeply. “Could we just talk about this tomorrow? It’s late and I’d love to go asleep now”.
Dissatisfied, Ema just laid back on the bed without saying a word.

MORNING 🌻
********************
Very early, Ximena had to sneak out of the house as she didn’t want anyone questioning or disrupting her. Dressed in all black with a black hood over her hair, she felt it was the perfect anonymous look for her.
She hurried to the backyard, got her bow and arrows together and left for the Palace. She felt thankful everyone at home was still asleep as she wouldn’t know how to tackle them. And if her plan hopefully worked, that would be her last day with them.

AT THE PALACE
***************************
Staring out the window, Alpha Nir was unusually cold. Tho, he’s always been cold, but that korjonry, it seemed different.
With his gold mask on and his hands crossed at his back, he stared at the scanty people moving about in the Palace. It was still calm and early – as calm as his soul.
He knew the moment someone stood behind his door and made it to open before an attempted knock. It was Daphne, and she marveled at how the Alpha had made it go open before she attempted a knock.
Dressed in her training suit, she stepped into the room and admired him for a second – how calm, yet dangerous he looked in his long black robe. She smiled lightly and bowed.
“Greetings, Alpha. Everything is set for the hunt”, she announced, but as usual, Nir took a while in silence.
With a sigh, he turned away from the window and started walking out the door, leaving Daphne muddled. And as well, she noticed he seemed a little different.
…
Getting out, he found his horse and that of the other guards ready. He didn’t like crowd when going hunting, thus, he always went with Daphne, Ethan and another named Jerri.
The disciples around bowed cohesively as he approached them, but he paid neither of them attention as he got to the horse, climbed on it and started riding out. Quickly, Daphne and the rest got on theirs and followed up.
……
Ximena had been lying in a bush close to the Palace gate, awaiting the Alpha’s sight. She couldn’t tell for how long she’s been there, but it was worth the while when she finally spotted him riding out with three others behind him.
Her eyes beamed, excitement gushed through her. She laid low and awaited them to go far enough before getting up and going after them.
…
Trailing the Alpha was the most difficult thing Ximena had ever had to do. Since they were on horses and she was on foot, it was nearly impossible keeping up with them but her determination kept her going.
She ran as fast as she could, checking for traces of horses’ tracks and listening for sounds. It was draining and frustrating but she was glad she didn’t give up as finally, she found the woods they’d gone into.
It looked scary and creepy, but nothing was scarier than not getting justice for her parents’ death.
She made sure to stay low as she walked into the thick forest, checking for traces to their exact location. She found their horses tied and figured they wouldn’t be far away. So, she continued walking.
It took her quite sometime and looked like a blessing when she finally spotted them – spotted him. The rest of the disciples were none of her concern.
That moment, fear and excitement battled inside of her – the fear of killing someone and the excitement of wondering if she’d succeed.
“He killed your parents, Ximena” a voice whispered in her head.
“He deserves to be killed as well”.
“Don’t reply on the cops. They’ll do nothing”.
From afar, she watched him trail the forest, his bow with him and obviously looking for a catch. The rest of his disciples were also looking around but couldn’t see Ximena since she was hiding behind a tree.
Taking a deep breath, Ximena pulled out an arrow from her bag, fixed it in her bow and got ready to aim. She’d used every technique the stranger had thought her the previous day and was certain she’d hit her target.
Standing rightly, she aimed the arrow at him, ready to pull. But the thought of actually killing someone stung hard at her. Should she really be doing this? Have blood on her hands?
“Alpha Nir cannot be killed” Kyya’s words came diving right in.
“Do you know how many times his enemies has attacked him? Poisoned him? Stabbed him? He can’t be killed and that’s the top factor that makes him so feared and respected”. For some reasons, they created a burning rage in her. Why would he kill others but couldn’t be killed? That’d be stupidity.
Strangely, he stopped walking and Ximena’s heart stopped beating when he turned around. What?
He stood, facing her direction and it was more like he could see her; like he was staring at her.
Her legs froze and anxiously, she pulled the string and watched the arrow go all the way to his chest.
